Quercus muehlenbergii
Chinquapin Oak is a medium to large tree which can grow to a height of 15-30 m. This tree has unique leaves compared to other Oak species. The dark green leaves are arranged alternately on the stem, 5-18 cm long, and have sharply serrated teeth along the margins. Chinquapin Oak produces several small acorns which are a valuable food source for many species of birds and mammals.
Chinquapin Oak is intolerant to shade and will grow best in full sunlight conditions. It can adapt to a wide range of soil types/moisture conditions and is considered drought-tolerant once established. Under ideal growing conditions, this tree can live to be at least 300 years old, benefitting future generations for years to come.
