Magnolia acuminata
Cucumber Magnolia is listed as “Endangered” in Ontario and Canada and is the only species of Magnolia native to Canada. The main threats to this species include habitat loss & deforestation, as well as poor reproduction due to isolated stands. Cucumber Magnolia can grow between 5-25m tall. It has large, oval-shaped leaves that are arranged alternately along the stem. This tree gets its name due to the resemblance of the immature fruit to a cucumber. As the fruit matures, red, fleshy seed pods are formed on the cone-like structure.
Cucumber Magnolia grows best in full or partial sunlight conditions. This tree is adaptable to a variety of soil types. It can grow in moist soils and has some tolerance for periodic drought and wet/flooded soils.
