Paw Paw is a very unique species that grows as a large shrub or small tree, growing to heights of 1.5-10 metres tall. The leaves are alternate with an oblong drooping shape to them. Paw Paw produces an edible fruit that is tropical in appearance and yellow to dark brown when ripe. It has a banana like flavor and soft custard texture. This fruit is also a popular food for several species of birds and small mammals. The bark and twigs of this tree are interesting, as they contain a natural insecticide that the tree uses to prevent insect infestations.
Paw Paw is shade tolerant and thrives in part to full shade. It prefers rich, loamy soil types that are moist to wet. These trees grow best when transplanted in the spring.
