Sassafras albidum
Sassafras is a large shrub or tree that grows 5-35 m under ideal growing conditions. The uniquely shaped leaves are bright green above with pale or white undersides. They are arranged alternate along the stem and can be either oval, mitten-shaped, or 3 lobed. In the fall, these leaves change to beautiful shades of orange-pink, yellow-red, and scarlet-purple. Greenish-yellow flowers bloom in late May and later develop into bluish-black hanging berries on a red stalk. These berries are occasionally eaten by species of songbirds and small mammals. All parts of the tree are fragrant when crushed and have a spicy smell. Leaves, roots, and bark of this tree have been used to flavor teas and add fragrance to soaps.
Sassafras is moderately shade-tolerant and grows best in part-shade or full sun conditions. It can tolerate all types of soil but prefers a moist well-drained loamy or sandy soil. Sassafras is a very hardy, low-maintenance tree.
