Quercus bicolor
Swamp White Oak is uncommon in Ontario and is considered endangered in other parts of Canada due to loss of swamp habitat. It is a slow-growing tree that can reach an age of 300 years old and a height of 22m. The leaves are typical of the white oak family with rounded lobes. The leaves are unique in that they are dark green in colour on top, with pale green fuzzy undersides. Many species of mammals and birds rely on the acorns as a valuable food source.
Swamp White Oak will grow in full sun or partial shade. It prefers moist soils that are acidic and has some tolerance to flooding.
